Vegan Nutella

 Plant based Nutella

Unfortunately plant based Nutella still isn't a thing here in the U.S, but the good news is you can easily make your own. Nutella is basically a chocolate hazelnut spread with tons of sugar inside. You can spread it on toast, put it inside croissantson top of strawberries or just eat it off the spoon! Why is Nutella not vegan? Nutella contains skim milk powder which is not vegan.

What you will need:

Hazelnuts

Sugar: You can sub for maple syrup/ agave but keep in mind you're Nutella may get more firmer/ stiffer.

Peanut Butter

Dark Chocolate Chips

Plant Based Milk- For this recipe I'm adding soy milk but you can use any plant based milk.

Cacao Powder

Salt: To intensify the chocolate flavor!

Step 1: Spread the hazelnuts on to a baking sheet and preheat your oven to 350 degrees. If raw, roast the hazlenuts for a total of 10 minutes. If already roasted, roast for 6 minutes to loosen the skins and make it easier to blend.

Step 2: Remove the skins off the hazelnuts.

Step 3: Time to blend. Add hazelnuts to a high speed blender or a food processor, although I recommend using a high speed blender. Blend the nuts until they are a nice and smooth consistency. About 8-10 minutes total. This seems like a long time but that's because you want it to be nice and smooth like peanut butter. My first attempt at making vegan Nutella turned out to be a fail because I didn't blend the hazelnuts for long enough and my Nutella became chunky and unspreadable! Once you're at half way point add some peanut butter for a smoother butter. Be sure to give your machine a rest every 2-3 minutes so it doesn't overheat.

Step 4: heat the chocolate over a double boiler or in the microwave in 30 second increments.

Step 5: Once the hazelnut butter is nice and smooth, add the cocoa powder, vanilla extract, plant based milk, and salt. Next add melted chocolate a little at a time and blend again until everything is well incorporated. Taste and adjust ingredients as needed. Add more sugar if you desire.

Transfer to an airtight jar and place into the fridge.
Equipment: blender or food processor. Airtight jar for storing
